Chronology of Events from 14th - 16th Century

1100 A.D

Founding of Timbuktu, originally a seasonal camp for Tuareg nomads.

1200s to mid 1400s

Malians seized control of the town. Timbuktu became part of the Mali Empire.

1438

The Malian empire disintegrated and the Tuareg controlled the city once again, for another 30 years

1464 to 1591

This was the period of rule under the Songhay Empire.

1591

Moroccan Arma forces captured Timbuktu. The Songhay Empire collapsed.

1612

The Arma administration at Timbuktu broke away from Morrocan rule and appointed its own leader
